First BBQ

Friday, April 24th, 2009

We’ve communally bought a big oil drum bbq from sainbury’s for £50. Yesterday if got its first trial of the year =)

Lots of things were great: The food was tasty, the cider was cold, the house didn’t burn down and everyone was on their best behaviour (mostly) and got on well with Claire…

I am looking forward to our next communal purchase which will be beer brewing equipment. Then we can have the two in combo!

Easter with Stu

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

It was great to see dad for an afternoon this weekend while he was teaching at Oxford uni. We went the the pub that Tolkien and C.S. Lewis used to meet in to discuss each other’s work. It has a hand written document declaring the founding of their society on the wall. And the fish and chips is great too!

We also had coffee in the cafe under the cathedral and a good laugh at my ridiculously studenty photos from spain. As an added bonus he bought me a massively expensive book for my wind power project that I needed but couldn’t really afford. Cheers Stu =)

He says hi to all the people that read this

Project hand-in

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Today has been amazing so far. I have:

- Handed in my design project, 30% of this years worry is now out of my hands! And I was a whole week early
- Filed away all of the diagrams, papers, journals, calculations, notes etc about my project that have been cluttering my desk
-  Given all of the books back to the library
- Paid my £1.60 fine for the late ones!
- Written a facebook status about it to annoy everyone else in my year

The relief is immense. I have worked so hard on this and made so little progress for so long. Remind me never to do anything chemical engineering related ever again. And best of all I think I did a really good job of it in then end. Even if university don’t think it is very ‘academic’, I am pretty sure that my industrial sponsor will be pleasantly surprised.

Roll on fifth year project!

=)

P.S. Hello to everyone I have been ignoring for the last six months whilst working it x

Tarifa 2009

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

You may have seen some of the thousands of tagged photos from this years multi-university kitesurfing trip to Tarifa on Facebook. If you have then you will probably have gathered that the whole ordeal was rather epic. We had pretty good wind, fantastic sunshine and great people. Once again Bristol + David were the heart and soul of the trip and once again we adopted the good folks from Falmouth and Birmingham kitesurfing societies into our midst.

There was pub golf which ended in the free-drink-mecca of Soho in the old town. They are the photos where everyone has their legs tied together with cling film! There was also a rave night; an example of the prerequisite attire follows:

Unfortunately we were not allowed on the roof of Tarifa’s famous Café del Mar, but there was plenty of manic bouncing to be had. Dave’s orange braces turned out to be a highlight for limbo competitions and general elastic slapping. The sensible people downed copious quantities of tequila in my room before heading out.

Five times world champion kitesurfer Mr Aaron Hadlow appeared in our midst both on the water and in our apartments – if only to drink my beer, steal my penknife and ‘borrow’ a Bristol girl for the night. All the same, it was something to write home about.

But best of all of it was probably the evening hangouts outside the apartments with a cool crisp beer or three. You just can’t beat that kind of strenuous occupation after a long day on the water with the wind blowing and the sun shining =)
